01:17 PM - The problem with AquaBrowser's holdings display has been resolved.  In order to fix the problem, we have rolled the bibliographic database back several days.  This means that changes made on Friday, 05-11-2012, or later will not be reflected in the catalog until tomorrow (05-15-2012) morning.

We regret this loss of functionality and apologize for the inconvenience it caused.

11:14 AM - Serials Solutions has brought the catalog back up.  The problem with holdings, however, is still unresolved.

We are still working on correcting the problem that is preventing the holdings from displaying on the full record display in AquaBrowser. There is no further news at this time.

While you cannot see the item records or place requests, you can still see titles. You can get into your account and check existing request statuses and pay fines. The tabs your library has made available linking to other services are working.

SELCO seeks an energetic, professional individual with excellent project management skills as a Library Legacy Project Coordinator.  The Legacy Project Coordinator will develop, administer, coordinate, and evaluate arts, history, and cultural programs across the 11-county SELCO region, as well as serve as a point of contact with statewide Legacy groups.  The person selected will initiate programs and work to build on-going partnerships with libraries and their arts, history, and cultural community partners.

This is a grant funded part-time position estimated at approximately 20 hours per week, with a variable work schedule to best meet SELCO requirements and the needs of the Library Legacy grant applicants.  The successful applicant must be willing to travel to the communities in the 11-county SELCO region.  The position will remain open until filled.  Preference will be given to applicants applying prior to June 4.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to head over to the Rochester Public Library to witness a workshop presented by the Great River Shakespeare Festival titled "they fight: Stage Combat."  At the beginning and then at the end again, the presenter, Doug, showcased a number of stage-use weapons such as swords and daggers.  However, the majority of the workshop focused on unarmed stage combat.  The group, which mostly consisted of teens, …

I am happy to announce that Tyler Irvin will be SELCO’s new Technology Support Librarian.  In this redesigned position, he will integrate a variety of teaching methods in the presentation of technology curriculum, both in the SELCO office and onsite; contribute to SELCO’s effort to improve information discovery through new services and technologies, and manage the SELCO Help Desk.  During the next few weeks, he will work closely with Aurora Jacobsen, Information Services Librarian (before she departs SELCO on May 24), as well as other staff to ensure a smooth transition.

Since joining the SELCO staff in October 2007, Tyler has demonstrated an ability to perform a variety of tasks of ever-increasing difficulty whether it involved special cataloging responsibilities during LSTA projects, working with local library Tween/Teen Advisory Boards, or managing SELCO’s Library Legacy programs. 

Officially, he will assume his new duties and job title on Wednesday, May 16 but will assist with the necessary transition to ensure Library Legacy activities continue as planned.  If you are interested in a complete list of tasks as outlined in the job description, click here.

The Legacy Review Committee has decided that there is enough evidence that libraries are busy planning programs during the summer to justify a midsummer grant review meeting.  Basically, rather than having to wait until the August deadline, applicants may send in grants by a June deadline for review.  Instead of the previously posted August 15 deadline, the next deadline is June 20 at 5:00 pm. …

Just in time for the end of school excitement and festivities, easel (Experience Art in Southeastern Libraries) has arrived at the Goodhue Public School in Goodhue, Minnesota.  

This installation of the traveling art exhibit will be in the school library media center from April 25 through June 6, 2012.  The second biennial easel display will tour libraries and galleries from January 2012 through June 2013.

easel is undertaken in cooperation with SEMVA - Southeastern Minnesota Visual Artists.

easel is funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage fund through a Library Legacy grant to SELCO from the Minnesota Legislature for Library Legacy programs and services.

During the past few months, members of the SELCO/SELS Board of Directors have been concentrating on identifying the skills needed for effective Board participation.  Members recently completed an individualized self-evaluation.  They also took time at the April Quarterly meeting to discuss the results of the survey, as well as ways to increase individual comfort level.

Quite serendipitously, I received the online edition of the Library Leadership & Management journal including an article, Look Before Leaping to a Board Position.  This useful board piece is published by the Library Leadership and Management Association and emphasizes many of the same points under discussion at SELCO.

Celebrate Minnesota Museums Month in May with a visit to your local museum and, better still, consider a new partnership.  SELCO continues to offer Community Collaboration grant opportunities.

Through a bimonthly application process, the SELCO Legacy Review Committee awards funds to libraries and library partners for arts and cultural projects, programs and events.  Applications will be selected based on the quality of the partnerships and innovation, the ability to accomplish the proposed grant obligations, the inclusion of clear and measurable outcomes and the overall clarity of the application.  Consider applying!

Michael Scott, Assistant Director, will lead Minnesota’s advocacy delegation through ten Congressional visits on Tuesday, April 24 in his role as MLA Federal Legislative Chair.  Michael and Mollie Pherson, Regional Librarian, as well as other library advocates from our fair state and around the country, will attend a briefing today provided by the American Library Association as part of National Library Legislative Day-2012.

In response to a concern brought up by a user, SELCO staff has called the Online Libraries for which we run postal mailers and emailed notices. We wanted to verify they do want their notices processed. The concern was that an overdue notice would go out even though the item was returned and just has not been checked in yet. This is a cost to the library as well as confusing to the patron, we understand that. So we left it up to each library for which we process notices. …

This was done because all items at the Cannon Falls Public Library will be unavailable while Director Justin Padgett and his staff move to the library's temporary home, starting April 23. The systems maintenance planned for this evening, 04-14-2012, has been successfully completed. All SELCO systems are functioning normally.

All SELCO services will be unavailable starting at 6:15 PM on Saturday, 04-14-2012, so that our Systems & Networking team can perform a series of upgrades and maintenance tasks on our Storage Area Network (SAN).  This work will take several hours. Effective immediately, users will see two substantial changes to the Online Catalog (AquaBrowser). The Format Facet  has been adjusted to break out movies by the specific physical carrier of the movie, i.e. DVD, VHS, etc. Additionally a Language Facet has been added that adapts the brief display to better enable the user.

A new manual message block has been created, called ‘stafmsg’ or ‘Staff Only message on borrower record.’ It will not show up on the borrower’s account via the Online Catalog but will show up in Horizon as a block on the borrower’s record. A report 'Manual Blocks by Borrower' is also now available in WebReporter in the Borrower folder.

The Rochester Public Library received a grant from SELCO's Legacy competitive grant program to work with the Rochester Civic Theatre to perform a play meant to continue the RACE exhibit which was at the library a few years ago.  The play, Light, explores the life and relations of a young girl in southeastern Minnesota who has an adopted African American Muslim father. …

ALS and NCLC to Merge

On March 8, 2012, the North Country Library Cooperative (NCLC) board adopted a resolution to merge with the Arrowhead Library System (ALS).  Subsequently, the ALS Board unanimously adopted a companion resolution.  The decision to merge, as approved by the two separate governing boards, comes after a year of study facilitated by Whitney Crettol Consulting.

The merger will be effective July 1, 2012 pending the official approval by the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Education to designate the Arrowhead Library System as the “multicounty,multi-type” library system for northeastern Minnesota.

12:07 PM - All problems with the AquaBrowser Full Record Display have been resolved. The final issue, real-time listings of item status and location, just got fixed by Serials Solutions.

Please accept our apologies for this issue. We are working with Serials Solutions to figure out what went wrong and how it can be avoided in the future.

After this post is completed, we will update the AquaBrowser Welcome screen.

09:55 AM - The Full Record Display in AquaBrowser has been restored. Clicking on a title in the search results will bring up detailed information on the title.

The real-time display of holdings and item status is still down. Serials Solutions estimates it will be a few hours before they can restore that functionality.

We do not have any estimate on when the problem will be resolved but will post updates as they become available. In the meantime, we have placed a note on the AquaBrowser Welcome screen to let patrons know there is a problem. Hopefully, that will help Online Libraries dealing with their patrons while we address this problem. …

Just a reminder!  The USA Toy Library Association and Think Small: Leaders in Early Learning are offering a day-long conference titled Let’s Play It Up! Libraries for Literacy to be held Friday, May 4, 2012 at Think Small in St. Paul.  Librarians, early childhood professionals, literacy coaches, childcare providers, health care providers, caregivers, and the public at large are encouraged to attend.

Sue Kirschner of Ohio’s Cuyahoga County Public Library will be presenting the keynote: You Want Me to Lend WHAT??!  Several Minnesota librarians will also be presenting, so go out and support them.  The cost is $75 per person and includes breakfast, lunch, and an anniversary reception.  Click here for the program brochure and more information.
