Reading Programs are a valuable library resource that provide a good reason for adults and children to go to their library! SELCO libraries have the option of participating in reading programs that eliminate the need for an individual library to create their own from scratch.
SELCO is happy to announce registration is open for our 5th Annual Camp Read-a-Lot on August 6, 2013, focusing on literature for Grades 2-5! This year, we are hosting Camp at Cascade Meadow Wetlands & Environmental Science Center in Rochester. Heidi Hammond from St. Catherine University and Gail Nordstrom from Viking Library System will discuss the selection process for the Caldecott Award, give folks ways to evaluate children’s materials, and great books for youth! In the afternoon, Illustrator Mike Wohnoutka will discuss the process for the book, MOO!, illustrated by himself and written by good friend and last year’s presenter, David LaRochelle. Super exciting speakers for a super fun day!
Here’s what you need to get started:
The registration fee for camp is $30 — this includes morning/afternoon refreshments and lunch. Attendees will be invoiced upon registration and all payments must be received by Wednesday, July 31, 2013 in order to reserve a spot. Any cancellations after July 31 and no-shows will be billed. Click HERE for a flyer to help us spread the word! Questions? Give us a call at 1-800-992-5061!
A special thanks to MELSA and Metronet for the use of the Camp logo!

Good afternoon! This is a reminder! The CSLP has launched the 2013 Teen Video Challenge, a national video competition for teens to get involved with reading and their public library's summer reading program. Teens across the country are invited to create a 30 to 90 second video with their unique interpretation of the 2013 teen slogan, Beneath the Surface, in combination with reading and libraries. The idea is to involve teens in summer reading, before and during the summer months, by being part of the process. This is an opportunity for teens to showcase their creativity and have their ideas heard before a national audience.
The Minnesota Summer Reading Program and Youth Services (SRP/YS) Committee is looking for teens in our state to create and submit videos. The SRP/YS Committee will decide a winner from all of the state’s submissions and that video will be named one of the CSLP 2013 Teen Videos to promote summer reading nationwide. $275 (yes, $275!!) will be awarded to the creators of the winning state video and their associated public library will receive prizes worth $125 from CSLP and Upstart. The deadline for submissions is Friday, February 1, 2012. Winners will be announced in March 2013. This program is optional – but we hope your public library participates and helps spread the word! Click here to see the entry form and for more details. Click here for a generic poster promoting the contest. Questions? Contact Mollie Stanford at mstanford@selco.info.

Greetings! Check out the latest issue of Minitex's Reference Notes here! The article, Teaching Simple Machines at LaCrescent Public Library by Library Director LaVonne Beach, features the STEM-related activities she ran during the 2012 Summer Reading Program. The goal of the program was to teach the basics of machines and how they are used in the everyday world, and the library was able to purchase educational Lego kits to support the program thanks to an IEEE grant. Congrats, LaVonne and LaCrescent Public Library!
Greetings! A call has been made for 2014 Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) Children's Manual ideas! The 2014 Children's theme is Fizz, Boom, Read! CSLP Children's Manual editor Patti Sinclair is especially interested in your ideas for:
- School visits and other ways of promoting the CSLP program in your community -- a skit or puppet show is always welcome!
- Setting the scene with library decorations, bulletin boards, props, etc.
- Original puppet plays, especially for one or two puppeteers
- Outreach ideas for underserved groups
Please send your ideas for the Children's Manual to Patti Sinclair at trishsinclair@sbcglobal.net by October 15, 2012. She is also looking for Early Literacy ideas for the same theme. Any recommended books should be in print and titles in Spanish are much appreciated.
And, just a reminder, here are the 2013 CSLP themes:
- Children's theme: Dig into Reading
- Teen theme: Beneath the Surface
- Adult theme: Groundbreaking Reads
